Adopt from China
(Last updated 8/08)

The Children
Most of the children available for adoption in China are girls that have usually been found in a public place and brought to an orphanage. China's one-child policy and the strong desire for a son bind many parents in China. For many birthparents this seems to be the only real choice, as violating China's one-child policy can mean serious penalties and fines imposed on the family.

Chinese orphanages are simple, clean facilities, and do their best to provide good basic care for the children. Most of the children waiting for adoption in China are infant girls. There are also many children that are older or have medical conditions, including boys.

The Process
As with all international adoptions, an approved home study, clearance from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and the completion of a foreign dossier are required. A dossier, which consists of various documents, certificates, verifications, and petitions to the China Center of Adoption Affairs, is a requirement in international adoption from China.

After your dossier is submitted to China, the next step is a referral of a specific child, including photos and some medical information about that child. While your placement agency will give you as much information about the child being referred to you as possible, The Cradle recommends that adoptive parents have their referrals evaluated by an experienced international adoption pediatrician prior to acceptance. We can provide you with referrals of recommended international pediatricians if needed.

Bringing your Child Home
Families generally travel to China within a few months after formally accepting their referral. Your adoption trip to China will last about twelve days and you will be a part of a group of four to ten families. Bicultural representatives will guide you through the entire adoption process, provide translation, arrange travel and accommodation, and act as your advocates and companions in China.
