Adopt from Korea
(Last updated 8/08)

The Children
Korean adoption has been an extremely popular option for Cradle families. Children become available in Korea primarily because of the economic disadvantages of their birth family or the social stigma of single parenthood. Children are placed in foster care until they are ready to travel and the adoption paperwork is complete. Korea is recognized for its high quality of medical and foster care. Referral information typically includes information regarding the birthparents as well as the child's medical and developmental history.

Parent Requirements
Korea requires adoptive parents to be between the ages of 25-44, married for at least three years and have no more than 4 children already in their home. They must have an income above the national average (at least $35,000), must be in excellent physical and mental health, be no more than 30% overweight. Husband may not be greater than 10 years older than his wife, and a wife may not be greater than 6 years older than her husband. All parents are encouraged to be open to either gender. There is some flexibility in these requirements for families adopting children with known medical or developmental needs. Korea will not allow the adoption of a child by a gay or lesbian person.

The Process
The Korean adoption process is the oldest of international adoption programs. A typical Korean adoption takes between 10-13 months from submission of dossier to placement.

Travel and Costs
The Cradle recommends that families travel to pick up their child.  A short, one- week trip is required for Korea. Many parents choose to stay longer, however, to learn about, and experience, their child’s birth country. In extreme circumstances, an escort may be available.

Korea requires that adoptions be finalized in the United States six months after placement.  Your home study counselor at The Cradle will assist your family in complying with these requirements and securing the finalized adoption as part of post-placement services.
