We are a family that likes to have fun whether we’re taking a train ride to Millennium Park in downtown Chicago, having adventures in Latin America, cooking out in our back patio with our upstairs neighbors, or dancing together in our living room and then collapsing on the floor in a pile of giggles. We met in 2002 and our first date was a mid-winter bicycle ride. This was not a typical first date! On a bright and sunny, but bitterly cold day, we bicycled 30 miles and then thawed out over hot chocolate at a roadside restaurant. Besides the frost bitten toes, what we most remember about that trip was how easy it was to talk to each other. Sparks flew and the rest is history!
I am an elementary school teacher in the Chicago Public Schools and I love my job! I work at a Montessori school not far from our home. I am a very active person and enjoy cycling and competing in triathlons. I’m also passionate about music-both playing instruments and dancing.
I am a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and work for a non-profit that helps fund alternative high schools across Chicago. My passions include reading anything I can get my hands on and spending time outdoors, bicycling, camping in the woods, and skiing in the winter.
Anne and Mike:
Both of us LOVE being parents and our kids delight and inspire us every day. We are also very close to our extended families and plan many visits throughout the year. We are very committed to healthy living. For example, we often ride around the city on bikes instead of in our car. We also think it’s important to give ourselves a break from the city. We spend many weekends throughout the year at our family cottage which overlooks a quiet, wooded lake in northern Wisconsin.
Sofia is five years old and loves being an older sister. She is very athletic and enjoys gymnastics and going to the park where she can do many tricks on the swings pretending to be on a trapeze in a circus. Now that she’s in kindergarten, she enjoys sounding out words and quizzing us on addition facts. Nico will talk to anyone. He is a joker and always has something “up his sleeve”. His favorite part of preschool is a dress up area where he can act out different characters. Along with Sofia, he enjoys read-alouds of his favorite stories.
Parenting, Diversity and Our Values:
Parenting is a lifelong responsibility that we take very seriously. We try to balance the boundaries and limits we place on our children with a healthy sense of humor in order to guide them on their individual paths.
We are a bilingual family (Spanish and English). Spanish is not our first language, but we are both fluent because of our extensive time in Latin America and our work within Spanish-speaking communities in Chicago. Also, our good friends and upstairs neighbors are from Colombia. We have made a conscious decision to raise our children to speak and understand both languages.
We have a strong desire to be a multicultural family because it reflects our values. We live and work, and our children go to school, in diverse environments, and we already have cousins, nieces and nephews from a variety of racial backgrounds. At the same time, we are aware of the complex realities of this decision and accept the responsibilities and challenges that come with it. We want our next child to thrive in the environment in which we live and to develop a strong sense of self. We will make sure our child has many role models from his or her cultural background.
Having shared who we are, we hope we’ve sparked your interest to learn more about us. We are excited by the open adoption model and want to build a lasting relationship on a basis that makes sense for everyone involved. But more than anything, we wish you strength and peace as you make the decision that works best for you and your child.
