India Adoption
Adopt from India
(Last updated 01/11)
The Children
In India, poverty and the stigma of unwed motherhood often lead young women to place their children for adoption. Children are referred for an international adoption generally around 18 months of age. Sibling groups are also available. Medical histories of the child's birth family are rarely available, but orphanage health records are fairly reliable.
Once at the orphanage, infants and toddlers receive care and consistent attention in the hands of experienced caregivers. The child to caregiver ratio is low, especially during the child's first six months.
Placement Resources
You can learn more about adoptions from India from an agency with a placement program in this country. Here are a few: Americans for International Aid and Adoption, Wide Horizons for Children, Holt International, and Children's Home Society of Minnesota
