Post Adoption Services - Search Services

In cases where we are not able to make a match through the registry, many of our clients choose to move ahead with our search services. When requested, The Cradle can try to locate a birth relative to see if there is mutual interest in having contact.

Letter of Outreach
The Letter of Outreach service is a letter sent from The Cradle to the birth relative's last known address listed in The Cradle's records. This attempt is most often successful with more recent adoptions or when there has been recent contact with the birth relative. When a Letter of Outreach is unsuccessful, Search Services may then be requested.

Search Services
In conducting a search, The Cradle uses information given at the time of the adoption. A variety of search techniques are used depending on the information available. Searches through The Cradle are conducted in an ethical and respectful manner, and the confidentiality of all parties is maintained. It is important to consider the many possible outcomes when requesting a search.

The time it takes to search for a birth relative can vary from a few weeks to more than a year. Although we are usually able to locate the person we are seeking, we cannot promise that a search will be successful. The majority of adopted people and birthparents we locate are open to contact; some are not. If you request a search, be prepared for the possibility that your birthparent or child may choose not to have contact.

You will also need to register with the State of Illinois Mutual Consent Registry before The Cradle can make any outreach on your behalf.
