Every year, thousands of Russian children are adopted into loving US
families, including children placed through The Cradle's Russia Adoption
Program. But for each child eagerly welcomed into a new adoptive home,
there are thousands who remain in Russian orphanages.
The Cradle Cares Humanitarian Assistance Program provides direct relief
and assistance to orphanages and baby houses in the 20 regions in Russia
in which The Cradle works. Twice a year, The Cradle's Moscow office invites
the regions to submit requests for specific humanitarian assistance projects.
The Cradle Cares Committee (a volunteer group comprised of Russia adoptive
parents and supporters) reviews these requests and makes allocations
based on the funds available. Regions that receive funding submit receipts
and photographs documenting the successful completion of the funded project,
insuring that funds donated to The Cradle Cares program actually make
a specific difference in the lives of children in Russia.
How have the funds been used?
The requests for assistance are heartbreakingly basic - one three-story
orphanage requested funds for fire evacuation equipment. Another needed
cribs. Others asked for money to purchase space heaters or to repair
inadequate plumbing facilities.
- In Pskov, Cradle Cares purchased toys and a new washing machine for the Internat of the town of Krasnogorsk.

- In Tambov, Cradle Cares provided books, furniture and adaptive books and toys for children living in the Boarding School for vision and hearing impaired children.

- In Nizhny Novgorod, Cradle Cares has purchased furniture, sent kids to sports camp and purchased beds for children’s bedrooms.

- In Kaluga, Cradle Cares purchased baby cribs.

- In Izhevsk, Cradle Cares purchased kitchen equipment and repaired two fire escapes.

- In Smolensk, Cradle Cares purchased space heaters and new storage closets.
