Haiti Update
January 20, 2010
In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake which hit Haiti last week, The Cradle has been receiving numerous calls from families wanting to help by adopting Haitian children. This is certainly a heart-warming reflection of our community's desire to help children in need.
From an adoption standpoint, the priority being given by the US State Department is to those Haitian children who were already in the process of being adopted by parents in the USA prior to the disaster. These children have begun to leave Haiti and our understanding is that their evacuation and unification with waiting adoptive parents will continue to receive high priority. To follow the news on this as it develops, check the State Department's website www.uscis.gov
There are more children who were in Haitian orphanages prior to the earthquake but who were not in the adoption process. It is also likely that many children have been orphaned by this disaster and will begin entering orphanages. Adoption may be an answer for many of these children. However, it is very difficult to predict how long it will take to determine which children are truly orphans, versus those who have extended family members who survived.
At this time, The Cradle is identifying agency partners who have well-established programs in Haiti so that when the international community is called upon to provide homes for Haitian orphans, we will be ready.
Thank you for your concern.
