Thank you for taking the time to read about our journey to becoming parents. We hope you find our story both authentic and relatable. From the day we met over 12 years ago, adopting a child was something we both undoubtedly wanted. We are confident we have the passion and commitment to be amazing Dads. Family is one of the most important things to both of us, and we have an abundance of love in our hearts to share with a child. We appreciate you giving us this chance to share who we are and what is most important to us in our lives.

We met in college at Iowa State University in 2004 and have been inseparable ever since. Our similar interests and common core beliefs instantly drew us to one another. The love we have for each other has grown with each passing year and there is no doubt this is forever. On our ten-year anniversary in 2014, we were married and said “I do” in a barn in Iowa during a ceremony performed in front of our family and friends.

We both have many passions to share with a child, including cooking, traveling, dancing goofy around the house, singing out of tune, and spoiling our firstborn fur-baby, Geoffrey. While life has always had its fair share of ups and downs, we both strongly believe that showing kindness and compassion, even when it’s not the easiest thing to do, will get you through anything. These are values we will instill in our future child.

Elliot on Matthew

Matthew is truly one of the most genuine people I have ever met. People see this instantly when they meet him. His laugh is totally infectious and it’s probably the thing I love most about him. Looking back on our time together, it’s hard to remember what things were like before I met him. I would not be the person I am today without him; his influence, and his laughter.

I have no doubt that Matthew will be an amazing Dad. His work ethic is unmatched to anyone. He values our family and friends above all else. His generosity, kindness, and wanting to “do the right thing” is evident in all his efforts, and I know he wants to teach a child these qualities. The way he loves and interacts with our nieces and nephews is always a joy to watch.

Between the two of us, Matthew will definitely be the more organized parent. If anyone is able to make a to-do list for multiple to-do lists, it’s Matthew!

Matthew on Elliot

Elliot is one of those people that you love to be around. His kindness and warm heartedness is unlike anyone I have ever met. He is genuine and authentic; this is what instantly attracted me to him. His creativity and attention to detail impresses me every day, and he is incredibly talented in everything he does.

Elliot has taught me to be a better person in so many ways. The way he treats every human with love and respect is something I most admire of him. He calms me in times of stress, and continues to be my source of strength.

Elliot has always been amazing with children and I know he will be an incredible Dad. His patience is unmatched to others, and watching him play with our nieces and nephews for countless hours is one of my favorite things.

Openness & Adoption

Adoption was never a question for us; we knew we would always start our family on this path. We understand adoption and openness on a personal level. Elliot’s brother, Corey, was brought into his family through an open adoption. Since day one, Corey always knew his story, and nothing was ever kept secret. He grew up understanding the importance of his birthparents, and their humbling decision to place him with Elliot’s parents.

We understand that your view of openness may differ from ours, or that your view on openness may change and evolve over time, and that’s okay. We’re open to whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and will follow your lead.

Family & Friends

We are fortunate to have an amazing family who has loved and supported us throughout the years. Our parents especially have always been a vital part of our lives. We look to them for guidance, as they demonstrate the type of loving, committed relationship that is important to us. Having both been married for 42 years each, they continue to teach us the importance of love and devotion each day.

We have also built a network of friends in Chicago whom we consider to be family; they play a very important role in our lives. Our friends love to cook and entertain, so we routinely spend the weekends checking out the newest restaurants, or preparing a special meal in our kitchen together. We are also fortunate to be surrounded by friends who have adopted through The Cradle. They have been a source of education and support for us, and we are thankful that our future child will have others in his/her life with a similar story.

Thank You

We appreciate you for taking the time to get to know us. We hope it allows you a glimpse into our lives and gives you a sense of the values and morals that matter most to us. We have so much love to share and are excited to have the opportunity to expand our family through adoption. We look forward to the chance to get to know you and wish you the best.

Fun facts

Matthew
  • I have a serious love for pizza, specifically pepperoni or sausage.
  • If I could do anything in the world, it would be to perform on Broadway. I’m not particularly musically inclined (according to Elliot I’m a bad singer) so this dream will probably never come true.
  • I love organization and to-do lists.
  • I love scary movies, but I always have to cover my eyes through the intense parts (Elliot always has to cover his ears).
  • I LOVE music, it helps set my mood. You can find me listening to music all day long; whether at home, in the car, or at the office. I’m a huge Spotify fan!
  • I love skiing! I grew up going to Colorado every year.
  • My Dad is 1 of 12 children and my Mom is 1 of 9. I have over 40 cousins. You can imagine holidays at our house!
  • I’m a proud introvert; it’s how I recharge my batteries. A quiet evening at home on a Friday is my ideal night!
Elliot
  • I LOVE food! I'm the least picky eater and I enjoy trying new things. If Matthew loses track of me at a party, I can usually be found wherever food is present.
  • When it comes to dancing, I have two left feet.
  • Growing up, every summer my family would pack up in a minivan and travel for 2 days to Vermont to visit my grandparents. I've been terrified of minivans ever since.
  • One of my favorite things about summer growing up was helping my Mom set up her classroom for the next school year (she taught 3rd grade for 39 years).
  • I helped my Dad restore a '75 Stingray (surprisingly, I still know very little about cars).
  • One of my favorite things about high school was running cross country and track.
  • I'm seriously OBSESSED with Christmas lights and decorating for the holidays. I was a total Christmas kid growing up. Not sure I've met anyone else who would ask for Christmas decorations from Santa.
  • In college, I spent a semester studying abroad in Italy.
